NovaF (New Slovenian Photography) / About Photography
(group exhibition) Text by Vasja Nagy About photography is the first of the three exhibitions under the project featuring new achievements in the field of photography in Slovenia, which has been held under the title THE NEW F, Tendencies of Slovene Photography since 1975. The exhibition features the outline of events in the field of photography in Slovenia; therefore, the featured photographers were not selected according to the theme, style and artistic approach, but according to qualitative criteria, and therefore show various conceptual models. Regardless of the fact that modern art pieces avoid clear style classifications due to the varied use of themes and styles, the featured photographs can to some extent be denoted with the same research orientation. This year’s publication comprises nine artists, who were allocated in three different independent units based on their expression by means of photography. The first unit features Bojan Radovič, Aleksandra Vajd & Hynek Alt and Andraž Beguš that primarily focus on the theory of photography, viewpoint and vision and the importance of photography from the media and artistic point of view. The second unit features Tanja Verlak, Peter Koštrun and Matjaž Wenzel, whose work can be characterized as the documentation of the outside world, which is further used for the interpretation of the intimate experience of the real world. The third unit features Tomaž Tomažin, Tilen Žbon and Žiga Pilih that are connected with a constructive approach to photography with the artistic freedom of manipulation leading their work to the very verge of the photographic character. Photographic images have not only become an integral part of our daily lives, but they have also become the most common and the most powerful means of communication. Hyperproduction supported by the development of technologies have not provided a better understanding of the media, but increasing absence of critical insight on the use of new means of photography and the consumption of photographic images. Fictive realism gives the media outstanding power to manipulate the viewpoint and memory and the impression of reality by a private photo album, media image or artistic work of art. The exhibition entitled About photography at the Stolp Photogallery gives us a chance to come face to face with some of the possible approaches that lead to awareness to what hides under the compelling surface of the photographic image. |
